How to spot a tourist trap restaurant in ten seconds

The good news about learning how to avoid tourist trap restaurants: they can't help advertising themselves. Stand outside any restaurant for ten seconds and count the tells:

  • A menu in six languages, laminated, with photos of every dish. Kitchens cooking for locals don't need to explain themselves in Finnish.
  • A host outside waving you in. Full restaurants don't recruit on the pavement.
  • A “tourist menu” or flag stickers by the door. The name says who the customer is — and it isn't anyone coming back next week.
  • A perfect view of the main attraction. You are paying for the window, and the kitchen knows it.
  • Every table speaking a different language, none of them the local one.

One of these can be forgiven. Three or more, keep walking — which brings us to where.

The two-street rule

Here is the economics of a trap: a restaurant beside a landmark pays landmark rent and serves customers it will never see again. It has every incentive to charge more and try less. Two streets away, rent halves and the customers are neighbours who come back weekly — or don't. Quality is the business model.

So make it mechanical: from any square, cathedral or viewpoint, walk two minutes in any direction before you even look at menus. Prices routinely drop by a third and portions stop being photogenic and start being food. It sounds too simple to work, which is exactly why the places one street over stay half-empty and excellent.

Eat when and where locals eat

Timing exposes traps as reliably as location. In Spain, a dining room full at 6 p.m. is full of visitors — locals arrive at 9. In Tokyo, the queue outside a ramen shop at 11:45 on a weekday is office workers, and office workers don't queue for mediocre lunch. Learn the local mealtime and look at who's eating at it.

Markets and lunch specials are the other shortcut. A market hall at midday, a scribbled “menu of the day” in the window, a counter with no seats — these formats exist for regulars, not tourists. If in doubt, order whatever the region is known for from the shortest menu you can find — a kitchen that does four things has to do them well.

The same logic extends past food: most genuinely non touristy things to do start with eating where the neighbourhood eats and asking the person next to you what else is nearby. Waiters, barbers and market vendors give better tips than any app, and they give them for free.

Five minutes of research beats fifty

You don't need a spreadsheet, just a five-minute routine before you go out.
